Another plus for Sachin Tendulkar, a great human being

Dear Editor,

Another piece of good news for followers of Sachin Tendulkar – the international media have reported that the top class cricketer has been put forward by the prime minister for a seat in India’s upper house of Parliament. The letter of recommendation has been sent by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to President Pratibha Patel who can nominate 12 people to the Rajya Sabha.

Of 250 Rajya Sabha members, 12 are nominated by the president for “special knowledge or practical experience in respect of such matters as literature, science, art and social service”, according to India’s constitution.

India’s home ministry finalises the nomination list only after getting the consent of the people they recommend.

Tendulkar made his international debut in 1989 and has played 188 tests and 463 one-day internationals. If accepted, he will become the first cricketer to take a seat in the upper house of India’s Parliament.

Tendulkar made history in March when he became the first cricketer to score 100 international centuries, in a match against Bangladesh. The 39 year-old is revered by millions of Indian cricket fans, some even see him as their ‘god’. He is not only a great sportsman, but also an outstanding citizen who is respected by all and I am sure that he would add new life to the Indian Parliament. For sure he has the clout and when he speaks people will listen. Perhaps some of our local cricketers will want to emulate him regarding the manner in which he carries himself both on and off the field. His approach and discipline to the game has resulted in him gaining much respect and admiration at the global level.

Yours truly,

R Singh
